Little Things
Perceived are building blocks—
the things on which
we build our lives.
But are they really little things?
For they can quake,
and they can shake
our world.
There are not many things in life
that are truly small—
just as there are no birds
that fly with “little” wings,
for little things
and little wings
still fly,
and still
bring
pleasures.

You
There is another you.
A more majestic you.
A gentle and yet nobler you.
There is another you.
One whose depth has not yet been attained.
Move into its realm.
Taste the nectar sweet.
There is another you.

Love Speaks
Hoisted in a pool of love—
the mystical, magical powers of love.
Love speaks:
Do you know me?
Have you owned me?
I am Love.
I heal, I build, I unite,
and yet so many
do not know my name.
You whisper my name
beneath the moon,
on mountain slopes,
and along the riverbanks—
and still,
have you fully lived with me?
I am Love.
Call me your meeting place.
I am your life.
Call me your beloved.
I am your light.
Just call me—
hold me,
fill me,
thrill me.
I heal your soul.
Oh, come now,
behold me.
I am your Love.
Love speaks.

About Beauty
not only beauty on the hillsides,
but beauty that sparkles in the soul.
Tell the children about worship—
not only worship in a church,
a synagogue, or a mosque,
but worship beside a brook,
in the tender arms of Grandma or Mother,
Dad or Granddad—
where quiet becomes a sanctuary
and laughter becomes a hymn.
Tell the children the truth—
not only about facts,
but the kind of truth
that steadies the heart
when the world feels too loud.
Tell the children about love—
that love is a sparkle from within,
a flame that doesn’t boast,
a light that doesn’t dim
when the days grow heavy.

Thanksgiving Day Gratitude Celebration
My first church community had never had a Thanksgiving Day gratitude celebration. In 1989, I announced, " Ladies and gentlemen, I respect your turkey and your ham and all the dressings, and also it is a worthwhile spiritual idea for us to meet and give thanks, even for 45 minutes.

California Writing Project
Poetry had always fascinated me since about age 12; my mother assigned me poems and would rehearse how I might present them. At age 14, when I was suspended from a private school, I wrote a poem to convince my dad to continue paying for my education.
